ABSTRACT: White Mold (WM) is a yield–limiting disease found in soybean. However, up to now no cultivars have been genetically resistant to this disease. Given this context, the present study aimed to develop superior soybean lines with resistance to WM, while maintaining other desirable agronomic traits. Two early maturing soybean cultivars (i.e., EMGOPA 316 and MG/BR 46–Conquista), moderately resistant to WM were used for biparental crosses from which the analyzed population was derived. Therefore, we assessed the resistance to WM in early generation testing of this population. Additionally, we determined the agronomic traits, genetic parameters and selection gains. From 348 F2 genotypes, 35 transgressive genotypes moderately resistant to WM were identified, amongst which 22 genotypes showed desirable agronomic traits for early cycle and grain yield. Moreover, 69 lines were selected as the most promising genotypes for each agronomic trait (i.e. based on the number of days to flowering and maturity, plant height at flowering and maturity, number of nodes on main stem at flowering and maturity, number of pods, grain yield, etc.). Among these selected lines, ten progenies emerged as the superior genotypes for grain yield and early cycle. All together, these results demonstrated that the cross between EMGOPA 316 × MG/BR 46 (Conquista) revealed promising progenies with moderate resistance to WM and/or desirable agronomic traits. Thus, these lines could be used as future resources for breeding efforts aimed at improving resistance to WM.

RESUMO A ferrugem asiática da soja (FAS), causada pelo fungo Phakopsora pachyrhizi, é uma das doenças mais severas na cultura. Dentre as estratégias para seu manejo propõe-se a utilização de genótipos com resistência horizontal ou parcial, ainda restritos no mercado, mas promissores pela durabilidade da resistência. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a resistência de diferentes genótipos de soja à ferrugem asiática para futura utilização em programas de melhoramento. Na safra 2015/2016, foram avaliados 11 genótipos de soja provenientes do LAGER-UFU e a cultivar Desafio 8473 (padrão de suscetibilidade) frente à infecção artificial e natural de P. pachyrhizi no campo. Com os dados de severidade da FAS, calculou-se a área abaixo da curva de progresso da doença (AACPD). O percentual de área foliar afetada e os valores da AACPD dos genótipos avaliados oscilaram de 1,56 a 80,75 e de 380,62 a 975,62, respectivamente. Os genótipos L-210, L-166, L-268, L-203, L-279, L-224, L-216 e L-218 apresentam menores valores de AACPD, indicando resistência parcial, enquanto os genótipos L-144, L-104, L-266 e a cv. Desafio 8473 apresentaram maiores valores de AACPD, portanto, com menor resistência parcial ou suscetíveis. Ainda assim, os genótipos L-144, L-104 e L-266 apresentaram coeficientes de progresso da severidade da doença de 1,8 a 2,0 vezes menores comparativamente à cv. Desafio 8473. Conclui-se que os genótipos do Programa de Melhoramento Genético da UFU (LAGER-UFU), apresentam potencial de utilização no desenvolvimento de cultivares de soja resistentes à P. pachyrhizi.

ABSTRACT Asian soybean rust (ASR), caused by the fungus Phakopsora pachyrhizi, is one of the most severe diseases that affect the crop. Among management strategies is the use of genotypes with horizontal or partial resistance, which are still restricted in the market but promising due to their resistance durability. The objective of this study was to evaluate the resistance of different genotypes to Asian soybean rust for future use in breeding programs. In the 2015/2016 crop season, 11 soybean genotypes from LAGER-UFU and cv. Desafio8473 (susceptibility pattern) were evaluated for artificial and natural infection by P. pachyrhizi in the field. ASR severity data were used to calculate the area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC). The percentage of affected leaf area and the AUDPC values of the evaluated genotypes ranged from 1.56 to 80.75% and from 380.62 to 975.62, respectively. The genotypes L-210, L-166, L-268, L-203, L-279, L-224, L-216 and L-218 have lower AUDPC values, indicating partial resistance, while the genotypes L-144, L-104, L-266 and cv. Desafio 8473 showed higher AUDPC values and therefore lower partial resistance or susceptibility. Even so, the genotypes L-144, L-104 and L-266 showed coefficients of disease severity progress 1.8 to 2.0-fold lower than those of cv. Desafio 8473. In conclusion, the genotypes from UFU Breeding Program (LAGER-UFU) showed potential to be used in the development of soybean cultivars resistant to P. pachyrhizi.

ABSTRACT. This paper aims to present the features of the new soybean cultivar UFUS Milionária, which was developed by the Soybean Improvement Program of the Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU) through crossing between IAC-100 and Cristalina RCH cultivars, using the Single Seed Descent (SSD) method. UFUS Milionária is resistant to many diseases caused by the fungus, bacteria, and virus. In addition, it also has been proved well-adapted to many Brazilian states, showing high yield even under water deficit conditions and Asian-rust infection; average yield was 4,451 kg ha-1 in 2015/16 growing season.

RESUMO Atualmente, as recomendações de manejo para a ferrugem asiática da soja (FAS) têm sido baseadas na aplicação de fungicidas protetores em mistura com triazóis, estrobilurinas e carboxamidas. Desta forma, objetivou-se avaliar se o incremento de produtividade proporcionado pela aplicação de mancozebe é devido unicamente à ação fungicida do produto ou à alguma alteração fisiológica na planta e qual alteração seria esta. O experimento foi conduzido no período de março a junho de 2015, na estação experimental da empresa UDI Pesquisa e Desenvolvimento em Uberlândia-MG, com a cultivar de soja 97Y07 RR. O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o de blocos casualizados, com quatro repetições e 14 tratamentos: testemunha, fluxapiroxade + piraclostrobina (58,45+116,55 g.ha-1), azoxistrobina + benzovindiflupir (90+45 g.ha-1), trifloxistrobina + protioconazol (60+70 g.ha-1), tebuconazol + picoxistrobina (100+60 g.ha-1), picoxistrobina + ciproconazol (60+24 g.ha-1), mancozebe (1125 g.ha-1), azoxistrobina + tebuconazol + difenoconazol (60+120+75 g.ha-1), e as misturas: fluxapiroxade + piraclostrobina + mancozebe, azoxistrobina + benzovindiflupir + mancozebe, trifloxistrobina + protioconazol + mancozebe, tebuconazol + picoxistrobina + mancozebe, picoxistrobina + ciproconazol + mancozebe, e azoxistrobina + tebuconazol + difenoconazol + mancozebe, nas mesmas doses supracitadas. A primeira aplicação dos tratamentos foi feita no estádio R1, na ausência de sintomas/sinais da doença. As aplicações, intervalos e o uso de adjuvantes foram realizados de acordo com as especificações fornecidas pelos fabricantes. Foi avaliada a severidade da doença, concentrações de clorofilas e carotenoides e trocas gasosas. Com esses dados construiu-se a curva de progresso para cada uma das variáveis (AACP). Ao final do ciclo da cultura quantificou-se o número de vagens por planta, de grãos por vagem, a produtividade e a massa de 1000 grãos (M1000G). Concluiu-se que a adição de mancozebe às misturas fluxapiroxade + piraclostrobina, azoxistrobina + benzovindiflupir, trifloxistrobina + protioconazol e tebuconazol + picoxistrobina potencializou o controle da FAS; mancozebe eleva a AACP para concentração dos pigmentos fotossintetizantes; quando adicionado à mistura azoxistrobina + tebuconazol + difenoconazol, o mancozebe aumenta a AACP para concentração de clorofila; e adicionado à fluxapiroxade + piraclostrobina elevou a AACP para eficiência intrínseca no uso da água e a M1000G.

ABSTRACT Currently, recommendations for the management of Asian soybean rust (ASR) have been based on the application of protective fungicides mixed with triazoles, strobilurins and carboxamides. Thus, this study aimed to assess whether the increased productivity provided by the application of mancozeb is due solely to the fungicidal action of the product or to some physiological changes in the plant and what type of changes these would be. The experiment was conducted from March to June 2015 at the experimental station of the company UDI Research and Development in Uberlândia-MG, using the soybean cultivar 97Y07 RR. Experimental design was in randomized blocks, with four replicates and 14 treatments: control, fluxapyroxad + pyraclostrobin (58.45 + 116.55 g ha-1), azoxystrobin + benzovindiflupyr (90 + 45 g ha-1), trifloxystrobin + prothioconazole (60 + 70 g ha-1), tebuconazole + picoxystrobin (100 + 60 g ha-1), picoxystrobin + cyproconazole (60 + 24 g ha-1), mancozeb (1125 g ha-1), azoxystrobin + tebuconazole + difenoconazole (60 + 120 + 75 g ha-1), and the mixtures: fluxapyroxad + pyraclostrobin + mancozeb, azoxystrobin + benzovindiflupyr + mancozeb, trifloxystrobin + prothioconazole + mancozeb, tebuconazole + picoxystrobin + mancozeb, picoxystrobin + cyproconazole + mancozeb, and azoxystrobin + tebuconazole + difenoconazole + mancozeb, at the same doses mentioned above. The first application of treatments was performed in R1 growth stage, in the absence of symptoms/signs of the disease. Applications, intervals and use of adjuvants were established according to the manufacturers’ recommendations. Disease severity, concentration of chlorophylls and carotenoids, and gas exchange were evaluated. These data were used to plot the progress curve for each variable (AUPC). At the end of the crop cycle, the number of pods per plant, grains per pod, productivity and thousand grain weight (TGW) were quantified. In conclusion, addition of mancozeb to the mixtures fluxapyroxad + pyraclostrobin, azoxystrobin + benzovindiflupyr, trifloxystrobin + prothioconazole and tebuconazole + picoxystrobin potentiated ASR control; mancozeb increased the AUPC for concentration of photosynthetic pigments; when added to the mixture azoxystrobin + tebuconazole + difenoconazole, mancozeb increased the AUPC for chlorophyll concentration; and when added to fluxapyroxad + pyraclostrobin it raised the AUPC for intrinsic water use efficiency and TGW.

A tecnologia de aplicação é um dos principais fatores para o sucesso das lavouras, pois dela depende a aplicação correta dos defensivos químicos. O experimento foi realizado na Fazenda Mandaguari (Indianópolis-MG). O delineamento experimental foi de blocos casualizados com 13 tratamentos e 4 repetições. Os tratamentos utilizados foram 4 pontas (TT, AD/D, ADIA/D, Cone Vazio) e 3 volumes de calda (100, 150 e 200 L ha-1) além da testemunha. O objetivo do trabalho foi desenvolver o estudo de pontas de aplicação e volume adequado para o controle racional das doenças na cultura do milho. Avaliou-se a severidade das doenças, gotas cm-2, %área verde, massa de 1000 grãos e produtividade, sendo realizada nesta uma análise econômica. Em relação à Mancha de estenocarpela, todos os tratamentos se mostraram superior à testemunha. A ponta ADIA obteve a menor quantidade de gotas cm-2 no baixeiro da planta. Todos os tratamentos foram superiores à testemunha em relação à %área verde. Todos os tratamentos proporcionaram um aumento no peso de 1000 grãos em relação à área não tratada, mostrando a relação direta no controle das doenças com o enchimento de grãos. A maior produtividade obtida ocorreu quando foi utilizado o volume de 100 L ha-1 em todas as pontas avaliadas. A análise econômica demonstrou a viabilidade de uma aplicação de fungicida para garantia da sustentabilidade na produção de milho.

Application technology is a major factor for the success of crops because it determines the correct application of pesticides. The experiment was carried out in Mandaguari Farm (Indianópolis Municipality, Minas Gerais State, Brazil). The experimental design was in randomized blocks, with 13 treatments and 4 replicates. Treatments consisted of 4 nozzles (TT, AD / D, ADIA / D, empty cone) and 3 spray mix volumes (100, 150 and 200 L ha-1), besides control. The aim of this work was to study nozzles and to set the suitable volume of fungicide application for the rational disease management in maize crop. Disease severity, drops cm-2, green area percentage, 1000-grain weight, and yield were evaluated; an economic analysis was done for the latter. As regards leaf spot caused by fungi of the genus Stenocarpella, all treatments were superior to the control. The nozzle ADIA received the smallest quantity of drops cm-2 in the plant bottom. All treatments were superior to the control regarding green area percentage.All treatments led to increased 1000-grain weight relative to control showing the direct relationship between disease control and grain filling. The highest yield was obtained when 100 L ha-1 was used in all evaluated nozzles. The economic analysis demonstrated the feasibility of fungicide application to ensure sustainability in maize production.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar a interação de diferentes cultivares de soja com fungicidas no controle da ferrugem asiática, em duas épocas de semeadura. O experimento foi realizado em condições de campo, de setembro de 2005 a maio de 2006. Foram analisadas as características: incidência, severidade (porcentagem de área foliar infectada e nota visual da parcela), número de pústulas por centímetro quadrado, peso de mil sementes e produtividade. A área abaixo da curva de progresso da doença (AACPD) foi calculada para os dados da doença. Foram observados efeitos significativos das cultivares, dos fungicidas, e da interação entre esses fatores, tanto nos valores de AACPD quanto no peso de mil sementes e produtividade. As cultivares IAC-100, Potenza e UFUS-Impacta apresentaram, em ambas as épocas de semeadura, a presença de resistência parcial à ferrugem asiática, evidenciada pelos valores baixos da AACPD. O fungicida do grupo dos triazóis (cyproconazole) e sua mistura com um fungicida do grupo das estrobilurinas (azoxystrobina e cyproconazole) apresentam controle eficiente sobre a ferrugem asiática.

The objective of this work was to analyze the interaction between cultivars and fungicides for soybean Asian rust control, in two sowing times. The experiment was carried out in field conditions, from September 2005 to May 2006. The following traits were analyzed: incidence, severity (percentage of infected leaf area and visual grading of the plot), number of pustules per square centimeter, weight of one thousand seeds and yield. The area under the disease progress curve (AUDPC) was calculated for disease data. Significant effects were observed for cultivars, fungicides, and the interaction between these factors for AUDPC, as well as for weight of one thousand seeds and yield. The cultivars IAC-100, Potenza and UFUS-Impacta, in both sowing times, presented partial resistance to Asian rust, which was highlighted by the low values of AUDPC. The triazole group fungicide cyproconazole and its mixture with the strobilurin group fungicide azoxystrobin were effective on Asian rust control.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo, quantificar a resistência à Phakopsora pachyrhizi em 50 genótipos de soja na região do cerrado. Foi conduzido em Uberlândia, MG , um experimento em casa de vegetação, durante o período de janeiro a julho de 2004. Foram avaliados os seguintes parâmetros de resistência: período latente médio, número médio de pústulas por cm² e severidade da ferrugem. Com base nesses parâmetros, calculou-se a área abaixo da curva de progresso da doença. Após, análise de variância e teste de médias que foram comparadas pelo teste de Duncan ao nível de 5% de probabilidade, utilizando-se o software ESTAT. Foram encontradas diferenças significativas entre os genótipos de soja para os parâmetros estudados. As cultivares Emgopa 313 e Monsoy 8211 apresentaram menor período latente médio, menor número de pústulas, severidade e área abaixo da curva do progresso da doença, sendo classificadas como resistentes ao patógeno no experimento realizado.

The aim of the present study, was to quantify the resistance in fifty soybean genotipes of the cerrado region to the rust caused by Phakopsora pachyrhizi .One experiment in greenhouse were conducted in Uberlândia , MG from January to July 2004. Average latent period, number of pustules per cm² and disease severity were evaluated. Based on these parameters, it was calculated the area under the disease progress curve. Significant differences were found among the soybean genotipes to the three studied parameters. The cultivars Emgopa 313 and Monsoy 8211 were more resistant to Pkakopsora pachyrhizi in greenhouse experiment.
